MUSIC MATTERS

What is Music Matters?

Music Matters inc. is a 501(c)3 not for profit organization recognized by the IRS and the State of Maryland as a charity that was formed to cultivate, support, and promote programs and events that make music – specifically live performance – accessible to broad and diverse audiences. Music Matters also operates the Hot August Music Festival, and will continue to present this long standing community festival for years to come.

Music Matters was formed from the idea that music is powerful and can have more of an effect on our daily lives than we even realize. The way music can be tied to emotions & memories, and the way it can effect both, might be a small action that has a much larger impact. For example, if you are feeling down and need a little pick me up, it’s easy to put on your favorite new song and within minutes, the way you feel, mentally and physically, can be changed. That’s why music matters. If every person could replace one negative interaction with another and make it positive with the power of listening to a song, the impact would be immense.

Music Matters also helps expand the reach of live performance music. We fund and organize programs that allow local musicians to visit hospitals, nursing homes, prisons, and other locations where community members are unable to attend a Music Matters event. These performances have a significant impact by supporting local musicians with an additional revenue stream and positively impacting the community members who now get to experience a live performance.

Through music, live performance, and community events, Music Matters seeks to have positive impact on our communities by:

  1. Delivering diverse musical styles to the community at Hot August Music Festival.
  2. Expanding Music Matters events to other communities around Baltimore and Maryland.
  3. Establishing and supporting programs that allow local musicians to perform in local hospitals, nursing homes, prisons, schools, and more.
  4. Supporting and coordinating resources to promote programs and research regarding how music effects memory in individuals with cognitive impairment like Dementia.

Through our programs and efforts, we believe we can create stronger communities with support systems that improve the lives of all the community members we serve.
